Steamforged Games, the developer behind the official Dark Souls board game, announces that it's working on a tabletop RPG set in the world of Lordran.

An official Dark Souls tabletop RPG is in development.

Announced via Twitter, Steamforged Games announced the project with a stylish trailer. The footage features one of the game's iconic bonfires burning brightly as a handful of dice are tossed into the flames. While the video is a fun way to mash FromSoftware's seminal role-playing game with the world of tabletop experiences, it doesn't give much away in terms of information. As the music swells, the developer reveals that the game is coming soon.

Steamforged Games has confirmed that it is working with FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco to bring the world of Lothric to fans' tables. Based on the logo used in the teaser trailer, the Dark Souls pen-and-paper RPG will likely just be based on the first game in the series, not adapting elements from Dark Souls II, Dark Souls III, Demon's Souls or Bloodborne. The developer has yet to reveal which mechanical system will be used for the upcoming tabletop RPG but it will likely be comparable to Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition.

Steamforged Games is no stranger to the Dark Souls franchise. The developer made a name for itself in 2016 when its Kickstarter campaign for an official Dark Souls board game earned over $5.4 million. Since then, the studio has gone on to turn several popular video games into cardboard experiences, including Horizon Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 3, Devil May Cry V and Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom.

As for Dark Souls, the brutal action RPG was initially released in 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. While gamers and critics initially bounced off the title due to its obscure narrative and punishing difficulty, it quickly earned a reputation as being one of the best modern video games ever designed. Many have praised its intricate and involved level design that tasks players with discovering shortcuts to make the journey after dying more accessible.

While the first Dark Souls can still be purchased for its original launch consoles, players wanting an updated version of the game can instead look for Dark Souls Remastered. This overhauled version of the game includes the critically acclaimed expansion Artorias of the Abyss expansion as well as a slew of graphical tweaks and updates. Dark Souls Remastered is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

More news on the Dark Souls tabletop RPG will likely be shared in the near future. Fans can sign up for updates on the game at Steamforged Games' website.
